BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ- The Governor Livingston Highlanders came into the action Friday night with an unbeaten record as a team and looked to continue building on their successful start to the 2017-18 season, as they faced off with the Arthur L. Johnson (Clark) Crusaders.
Facing a shorthanded Johnson team, the Highlanders recorded a large amount of their match points on forfeits as they rolled past the Crusaders by a final score of 60-18.
The Highlanders fell behind by a score of 6-0, with Johnson sophomore Jason Duffy (106) facing off against Governor Livingston freshman Andrew Ciraco and recording a pin at the 0:39-mark of the first round.
Governor Livingston sophomore Harrison Kelly (113) faced off against Johnson’s James Lordi and in an intense three rounds, Kelly outscored Lordi on bonus points by a final tally of 10-4, earning three points for his team to cut the lead to 6-3.
“Coach [Ortega] tells us every day, we just got to go out there and push it as hard as we can,” Kelly said. “When we get the bonus points, we’ve got to stack them up. We can’t let any bonus points go. This wasn’t the closest match tonight, but in close matches, that’s all that matters.”
“If we put in all the hard work in the room, that’s what’s going to get us points on the mat,” he added.
The Highlanders were rewarded 18 additional points following Crusader forfeits in the 120-pound, 132-pound and 138-pound classes to take a 27-6 lead.
