Girls Lacrosse: New Providence Pioneers Surrender Ten First-Half Goals, Lose to Indian Hills HS

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ- The New Providence High School Pioneers girls varsity lacrosse team returned to their home field, looking to rebound from a 14-13 loss on Saturday to Caldwell HS and for the first portion of the first half, they appeared to be on the right track.

However, a stretch of seven unanswered goals in the first half doomed the Pioneers, falling behind 10-3 at halftime and couldn’t replicate the early successes they had, hindering their chances of a comeback earlier on.

At parts of the second half, the Pioneers appeared to play better and cut into their deficit down to five goals but lost to the Indian Hills High School (Oakland) Braves 15-8 Wednesday afternoon in New Providence.

In the first five-and-a-half minutes, New Providence got goals from sophomore Kaitlyn Cumiskey, taking a 2-0 lead and everything appearing to go in their favor. On the next series following the next faceoff, the Braves immediately raced into the Pioneers zone and saw good looks, eventually finishing it off with a goal from senior Ashley Bremer at 8:23 of the first half.

Junior Katherine Kerin tied the game less than two minutes later at 2-2 and would give her team the 3-2 lead at 9:05 of the first half. New Providence answered a minute later from senior Iris Kaloshi, the score now 3-3. The nine-minute stretch that followed would be the demise of the Pioneers.

Bremer and junior Devin Thompson both recorded hat tricks in the stretch, where the Braves scored seven unanswered goals to take a 10-3 lead into halftime. In a span of 1:40, Thompson, junior Jenna Murphy and Bremer all tallied goals to make it 6-3 Braves over the Pioneers. Bremer and Thompson scored the last four goals of the half for Indian Hills.

An additional factor to the Pioneers’ demise in the first half, with a lot of their possessions ending with mishandling of the ball, turnovers and being outhustled for ground balls.
