Girls Basketball: Annabella Yorio’s Three-Pointer Lifts Summit to Overtime Win over Governor Livingston

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ-  The Summit Hilltoppers girls varsity basketball team took to the court on the road against the Governor Livingston Highlanders, but were shorthanded, with several players not with the team on their bench.

“We were shorthanded,” Summit head coach Tom Kenny said. “We’re down three kids with the flu and one kid in the concussion protocol, so we’re extremely shorthanded today.”

Summit freshman Annabella Yorio hit the game-winning three-pointer with six seconds left, lifting the Hilltoppers to a 59-56 overtime win Saturday morning in Berkeley Heights, as they also held off a furious push from the Highlanders.

“We had to stay focused, play hard throughout the entire game and keep up the intensity,” Yorio said.

Yorio got the ball while the Highlanders applied pressure to other Hilltoppers players. She fired the ball towards the hoop for the three-pointer to help her team squeak out a wild victory.

“I didn’t think it was going to go in, to be honest,” Yorio said. “Once it went in, I was very happy. It was exciting.”

On the next subsequent possession, the Highlanders, after using their final timeout, couldn’t complete an inbound pass and were whistled for a five-second violation, giving the ball back to the Hilltoppers, who would sink a free throw and hold them off for the win.
