CRANFORD – The Cranford High School football team took to the field, looking to bounce back from a 22-0 shutout loss at the hands of Rahway last week, but found themselves shorthanded as they had a date with the 2017 NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 runner-up Voorhees Vikings.
With lead running back Jimmy Shriner out, that’s when Cranford senior Rob Schork made an immediate impact for his team on offense.
He scored two touchdowns in the second half, while junior quarterback Connor Katz finished the night 17-for-25 with 154 yards and two touchdown passes, leading the Cougars past the Vikings 28-21 Friday night at Memorial Field in a Mid-State 38 Mountain Division matchup.
“Monday after practice, they told me to start getting ready to run the ball,” Schork said. “I had started playing our tight end spot, so I was playing both [positions] all week. They mainly put me in at running back today.”
In total, Schork ran for 110 yards on 17 carries with his rushing touchdown and finished with two receptions for 22 yards, along with his 12-yard touchdown reception, shining on a night where he was asked to do more than usual.
“What impresses me the most about Rob is that he knows the plays from those positions,” Cranford head coach Erik Rosenmeier said. “We have him playing [halfback] on offense and tailback. There are a lot of assignments. We added assignments this week and he was able to get the assignments and didn’t miss any of those.”
