Football: Johnson Crusaders Defeat Spotswood HS

CLARK, NJ- After a tough three-game stretch that featured three losses in a row, the Arthur L. Johnson High School Crusaders varsity football team took to the field for their Senior Night game, looking to get a victory for the senior players.

Co-captains Sebastian Iakouchevitch and Rico Veltre, along with Vito Galluzzo, Tom Sweeney, Tom Bizzoco, Nick Serpe, Danny Burns, Luke Giltner, Joey Allman, Josh Hill and videographer Bobby Dante were all recognized for their hard work and dedication to the Johnson football program, along with the senior cheerleaders and marching band members.

“The one thing I’ve loved is that they persevere and keep at it,” Johnson head coach Anthony DelConte said. “When you go into your senior year, this isn’t how you picture it, being 2-5, knowing that you’re not going to be in the playoffs and the year wasn’t as successful as you would like it.”

“We’ve got ten seniors altogether and half of them are hurt and can’t play. That’s not the way you envision your senior year,” he added. “Their ability to persevere, keep coming to practice and keep getting after it, they’re trying to prove, that is a big thing that will stick out. That’s what being a Crusader is all about. I wouldn’t expect anything else from them.”

The game that followed for the Crusaders would be a night to remember despite the tough obstacles the 2018 season has presented for them, as they took to the field against the Spotswood High School Chargers.

Sophomore quarterback Joe Greenbush went 4-for-6 with 41 passing yards and a touchdown pass, while Iakouchevitch ran for 145 yards on 23 carries and ran for a touchdown, capping off a 35-13 win over the Chargers in a Union County vs. Middlesex County crossover matchup Friday night in Clark.

Johnson struck first, with Galluzzo capped off a Crusaders drive, cashing in for a four-yard rushing touchdown to give his team a 6-0 lead (two-point conversion failed). Later in the quarter, Greenbush extended his team’s advantage to 12-0 after a 14-yard rush for the score.
