CLARK, NJ – Starters on the Arthur L. Johnson High School Crusaders boys varsity basketball team spent more time on the bench than usual giving other team members a chance to contribute to the win against the David Brearley High School Bears with a final score of 72-39 Thursday afternoon in Clark.
The Crusaders jumped to a 10-0 lead within the first two minutes of the game and completely stifled the Bears on several of their possessions. They would take a 24-4 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
Senior George Visconti powered Johnson with 11 points in the opening quarter, while junior Brandon Hund added six points.
In the second quarter, Johnson raced out to a 41-6 lead, with the starters all combining for 17 of the 22 points in the quarter. With 3:24 left in the second quarter, the Crusaders called a timeout and swapped out the starters for other team members.
Juniors Eric Bretz, Art Brownlee, Marcos Castro, sophomore Rob Lukasiewicz and freshman Tino Puentes saw extended minutes of playing time and with Johnson’s starters cheering them on.
“These guys are there for us every second of practice and games,” Visconti said. “They’re always cheering for us, keeping the morale right throughout the team. Giving those guys a chance to get in, they played their hearts out.”
Castro drained a three-point shot, getting the rest of the players on their feet and Brownlee added a basket in the quarter, as Johnson took a 46-12 lead into halftime.
