NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ- New Providence High School junior Dylan Bedder can be seen in the winter putting in the work to help his team on the basketball court, but as baseball season comes along, he shines on the mound. In his team’s season opener against New Brunswick on March 31, he threw a complete game shutout, as the Pioneers won 7-0.
He took the mound Tuesday afternoon, looking to replicate the same performance. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, striking out 9 batters, scattering six hits and allowing two runs as the Pioneers defeated the Arthur L. Johnson High School Crusaders 3-2 Tuesday afternoon in New Providence.
Bedder produced two 1-2-3 innings in the top of the third and fifth innings, shutting down the Johnson lineup to keep the lead intact.
“He was attacking the zone for the most part today,” New Providence head coach Chris Brodeur said. “There were a couple of times when things got away from him, but he was able to refocus and bring them back in.”
Bedder struck out the first two hitters he faced before running into trouble. After issuing a walk to Johnson senior Joe Turek (freshman Saul Lopez served as courtesy runner, stole second base), Johnson senior Kevin Metz connected for an RBI single, scoring Lopez to put Johnson on the board first 1-0.
Next man up, Johnson sophomore Steve Harrington took Bedder deep for an RBI triple to make the game 2-0 with Johnson out in front. He limited the damage by getting an inning-ending strikeout and his teammates responded with offense of their own.
