LINDEN, NJ – Linden High School defeated the Patrick School in a competitive game Tuesday night as Senior Tavon Jones has continued to play at the highest level for his team, averaging 24.9 points per game.
The last time the two teams faced each other, he scored 41 points, but the Linden High School boys varsity basketball team lost 84-82 in double overtime to the Patrick School on January 16 at Hillside High School.
“This whole year, we’ve had a lot of people doubting us,” Jones said. “A lot of people were saying we weren’t good enough.”
When the teams took to the floor, Jones and Linden were determined to not let the same thing happen again. With Linden and the Patrick School in a deadlocked, tight game through the first three quarters, Jones took over.
He led his team with 35 points, scoring 18 of them in the fourth quarter as the Linden Tigers (ranked No. 11 on NJ.com’s Top 20) defeated the Patrick School Celtics (ranked No. 5 on NJ.com’s Top 20) 70-57.
It was also five days ago, in a 70-32 win over Elizabeth HS on Thursday, that Jones recorded his 1,500th career point.
“Tavon Jones is playing as the best player in the state of New Jersey night-in and night-out,” Linden head coach Phil Colicchio said. “Last time against [Patrick School], he had 41 points. This time, he had 35 points. The kid does whatever we need him to do in order to win. He’s having a great year and hopefully, he gets rewarded for it all.”
The Tigers outscored the Celtics 24-14 in the final frame to take the game.
