CLARK, NJ- Two days after coming up just short in the Union County Tournament Quarterfinals, the New Providence High School Pioneers traveled on the road, looking to move closer to locking the conference championship and potential home-field advantage in the state tournament.
After being deadlocked in a scoreless game with the Arthur L. Johnson High School (Clark) Crusaders, the Pioneers scored four goals in the second half to capture the victory by a final score of 4-0 Monday afternoon in Clark.
The Crusaders controlled a lot of the earlier pace of the game before New Providence made the necessary adjustments at halftime that led to the second half outburst on the offensive side.
“We knew that we had to increase our speed of play on both the technical side and our decision-making,” New Providence head coach Jon Panella said. “We came out a little flat in the first 15 minutes.”
As the second half started, the Pioneers went right to work and got on the board in the opening minutes of the second half.
New Providence junior James Miller scored the game’s first goal with a shot that got to the back of the net to give his team the 1-0 lead.
