CLARK, NJ- Arthur L. Johnson High School senior Danielle Nugent rushed into the offensive zone when her team gained control of the ball. As she saw a chance to score on net, senior Shelby Lynes made the pass and Nugent took the shot, which bounced in and resulted in her being instantly mobbed by her teammates on the field.
Nugent scored both goals, including the game-winner at the 6:59-mark of the second overtime period, as the fourth-seeded Crusaders defeated the fifth-seeded Metuchen High School Bulldogs in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 Quarterfinals by a final score of 2-1 in double overtime Monday night in Clark.
She now has 21 goals on the season and recalled how the Crusaders successfully got the chance to score and finish.
“It all started in the back, they passed the ball,” Nugent said. “They just had a pass go up here and then Shelby [Lynes] was able to use her speed to take it down and carve it and she sent it over just in time and I was able to hit it in.”
The timing of Lynes’ pass allowed Nugent enough time for a chance to end the game and she successfully fired on net to win it for her team. Lynes used her speed to beat the defender around the corner to make the pass for Nugent’s game-winning goal.
