Girls Soccer: New Providence Holds On to Early Offensive Spark to Shut Out Gov. Livingston 2-0

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ- The New Providence Pioneers took to their home field, looking to rebound from their 2-0 loss to Cranford on Tuesday, as they welcomed in their crosstown rival, the Governor Livingston Highlanders. With an early spark on offense, the Pioneers defeated the Highlanders, 2-0 Thursday afternoon in New Providence.

“The one thing we were missing on Tuesday was the final ball, whether it was a pass or shot whereas of today,” New Providence head coach Scott Murphy said.

Both Governor Livingston and New Providence traded scoring chances early in the game, including a close kick in front for New Providence, only for the ball to fall short of the net — the game remained scoreless through 15 minutes of play. As the half went along, it took one wide-angle kick to change the score.

Governor Livingston senior goaltender Michelle Coyle came out to kick an approaching ball, but it deflected off a New Providence player and the Pioneers set up on offense as they were battling for the scoring chance.

Following a New Providence shot on goal, the ball appeared to be heading in for the game’s opening goal, but it bounced off the right post and Pioneers senior Caroline Zoufaly was near the far side and kicked the ball in for the first goal of the game.
